Our Approach to Literacy
We are committed to providing our students with the foundations of literacy that will prepare them for life. English Language Arts are the most critical skills for student achievement in all content areas, as well as all areas of life. Our curriculum is grounded in the belief that all our students are readers, writers, listeners, and speakers that we will develop into lifelong learners. Elementary literacy development is a progression of skills that begins with understanding spoken words, decoding and encoding written words, and culminates with gaining meaning from text or effectively expressing ideas, beliefs, and information. Utilizing the workshop model for reading and writing, our students are provided daily explicit instruction with authentic texts from a variety of genres. The lessons are based upon a gradual release model that leads our students to literacy proficiency through conferencing, small group, and independent application. Our programs work in tandem so that our students are able to make connections across curricula.
