Reading and acting go hand-in-hand for second graders at Forest Lake Elementary School. Performance is a key component in helping youngsters develop their literacy skills.
Together, second grade teacher Barbara Moeller and reading teacher Erica D’Allesandro support students as they bring classic tales to life. Stories such as “The City Mouse and the Country Mouse” and “Jack and the Beanstalk” are transformed into plays, in which students take on the roles of narrator and the different characters.
Ms. Moeller explained that an interactive reading experience makes students more engaged and improves their reading comprehension and fluency. It also helps them better understand the elements of fictions and expands their vocabularies.
